Lok Sewa Photo and Signature Size: How to Resize
Lok Sewa photo and signature size explained: KB limits, pixels, passport size 35x45 mm, why uploads fail and how to resize on your phone for free, privately.
For the Lok Sewa Aayog online form you usually need a JPG photo in passport proportions between about 10 KB and 50 KB, and a JPG signature in a similar size range. A printed passport size photo in Nepal is 35 x 45 mm, which is 413 x 531 pixels at 300 DPI. The easiest way to hit those numbers is my free passport and Lok Sewa photo resizer, which crops, resizes and compresses the photo inside your browser and shows you the final size in KB before you upload.
I wrote this guide because the most common question about online forms in Nepal is not about the exam. It is "why won't my photo upload?" The rules are simple once you know which number the form is checking, and I will walk through each one.
Key takeaways
- Online forms check two things: the pixel size (width x height) and the file size in KB. Most rejections are about KB.
- The Lok Sewa limits that appear most often are 10 to 50 KB for the photo and 5 to 50 KB for the signature, but always confirm them in the notice you are applying to.
- Passport size in Nepal is 35 x 45 mm, or 413 x 531 pixels at 300 DPI.
- Reduce KB by lowering JPEG quality, not by shrinking the photo to a tiny size.
- A signature can be too small in KB. Clean white paper compresses to almost nothing.
- Keep the original photo and make a resized copy for each form.
The sizes you will be asked for
Different forms ask for different things, and the notice for each vacancy is the final word. These are the sizes that come up most often:
| Use | Physical size | Pixels at 300 DPI | File |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passport size (PP) photo | 35 x 45 mm (3.5 x 4.5 cm) | 413 x 531 | JPG |
| Lok Sewa online form photo | Passport proportions | Around 350 x 450 | JPG, about 10 to 50 KB |
| Signature for online forms | Wide strip | Around 350 x 150 | JPG, about 5 to 50 KB |
| Stamp size photo | 25 x 30 mm | 295 x 354 | JPG |
When I researched this, the third-party guides disagreed on the exact pixel numbers for the PSC form. Some say 350 x 450, others different sizes, and the KB limits ranged from 50 KB to 200 KB at the top. The 50 KB ceiling is the strictest one I found, so it is the safe default in my tool, but every preset can be edited. If your notice says something else, type its numbers into the custom fields.
Pixels, millimetres and DPI in plain words
A digital photo has no physical size, only pixels. It gets a physical size when you print it. DPI (dots per inch) connects the two: at 300 DPI, every inch of paper holds 300 pixels.
So for a 35 x 45 mm photo:
- 35 mm is 1.378 inches, and 1.378 x 300 = 413 pixels wide.
- 45 mm is 1.772 inches, and 1.772 x 300 = 531 pixels tall.
Phones save photos with a "72 DPI" or "no units" label, even though the photo itself has thousands of pixels. Some print shops and portals read that label. My resizer writes 300 DPI into the JPG header, so a photo shop prints it at the right size.
Why uploads fail
When a form rejects a photo, it is almost always one of these:
- The file is too big in KB. A phone photo is often 2 to 5 MB. Even after cropping, a high-quality JPG can be 150 KB.
- The file is too small in KB. Signatures on clean paper can compress to 2 or 3 KB, below a 5 KB minimum.
- Wrong file type. iPhones save HEIC photos by default, and many forms accept only JPG.
- Wrong proportions. A square crop of a passport-style photo stretches or gets cut off.
- The face is too small. Your head should fill most of the frame, roughly 70 to 80% of the height.
The resizer handles the first four directly. For the fifth, zoom in until your face fills the frame.
How to resize a photo for Lok Sewa, step by step
- Open the photo resizer on your phone or computer.
- Tap the drop area and choose your photo. It is read on your device, not uploaded.
- Pick Lok Sewa photo in the size preset. Width, height and the KB range fill in.
- Drag the preview to centre your face and use the zoom slider until your head fills most of the frame.
- Tap Create JPG. The tool tries JPEG qualities from high to low and keeps the highest one that fits under the limit, so the photo stays as sharp as possible.
- Check the size shown in green, then tap Download JPG and upload that file to the form.
If the tool says it could not get under the limit, reduce the width and height a little or crop tighter. A smaller picture needs fewer bytes.
How to prepare your signature
Sign with a dark blue or black pen on plain white paper. Photograph it flat, in daylight, without your shadow on it. Then:
- Choose Signature in the preset menu. "Clean up signature" switches on.
- Clean-up turns the grey paper pure white and keeps the ink dark. Move the strength slider if thin strokes disappear or the paper still looks grey.
- Crop so the signature fills the strip with a small margin.
- Create the JPG and check the size.
Because a clean signature compresses so well, it can come out under 5 KB. When that happens the tool first saves it at maximum quality, and if it is still too small, it adds a standard comment block inside the JPG file to reach the minimum. Image viewers and forms ignore comment blocks, so the picture does not change.
Printing passport size photos at home or in a shop
After you create a passport size photo, the tool offers two print sheets:
- 4 x 6 inch sheet: six photos, the size photo shops print in a minute.
- A4 sheet: thirty photos for a home printer.
Both are 300 DPI JPGs with light grey cutting guides. The important part is printing at 100% or "actual size". If the print dialog uses "fit to page", the photos shrink and will not be 35 x 45 mm.
For the e-passport, the Department of Passports normally takes your photo at the enrolment counter together with your fingerprints, so you do not upload one with the online form. Printed PP size photos are still needed for many other applications, from citizenship to college forms.
Tips for a photo that gets accepted
- Face the camera with a neutral expression and both eyes open.
- Stand in front of a plain white or light wall, in even light, with no shadow behind you.
- Take the photo from about a metre away and crop, instead of holding the phone very close, which distorts the face.
- Remove glasses if they reflect light.
- Save the original. Limits differ between forms, so you will resize it again.
Why I made this tool private
ID photos and signatures are exactly the kind of file I do not want on a stranger's server. Many free resizers upload your photo to process it. Mine draws the photo onto a canvas inside your browser, compresses it there with the browser's own JPEG encoder, and hands you the file. Nothing is sent over the network. I test it automatically with real image files: the Lok Sewa preset must land between 10 and 50 KB at exactly 350 x 450 pixels and 300 DPI, signatures must reach the minimum size with pure white paper, and the 4 x 6 sheet must be exactly 1200 x 1800 pixels.
The same goes for my other free tools. If you are applying for jobs, the ATS-friendly CV generator builds a CV that parsers read cleanly, and the PDF tools can turn scanned certificates into one PDF without uploading them.
FAQ
What photo size does the Lok Sewa online form need?
Lok Sewa (PSC) notices and guides usually ask for a JPG photo between about 10 KB and 50 KB in passport proportions, and a JPG signature in a similar range. The exact numbers can change between notices, so read the current one and match its limits exactly.
What is passport size photo size in Nepal in pixels?
A Nepali passport size photo is 35 x 45 mm. At 300 DPI, the standard print resolution, that is 413 x 531 pixels.
Why does the form say my photo is too large even after I cropped it?
Forms check the file size in KB, not only the width and height. A small photo saved at high quality can still be 150 KB. Lower the JPEG quality until it fits, which is what the free resizer does automatically.
Why is my signature rejected for being too small?
A clean signature on white paper compresses very well, sometimes to 2 or 3 KB. If the form needs at least 5 KB, save it at maximum quality, or use a tool that pads the file with harmless metadata to reach the minimum.
Can I resize my photo on my phone?
Yes. A browser-based resizer works on Android and iPhone. Choose the photo from your gallery, set the size, and download the JPG. Nothing needs to be installed.
Is it safe to resize ID photos on a website?
It depends on the website. Many upload your photo to a server. Mine processes the photo inside your browser, so it never leaves your phone or computer.
Wrapping up
Photo uploads fail because of KB limits far more often than because of the picture itself. Know the two numbers your form checks, pixels and KB, confirm them in the notice, and let a tool find the best quality that fits. Open the free passport and Lok Sewa photo resizer, pick a preset, and you will have a photo and signature ready for the form in a couple of minutes, without your ID photo ever leaving your device.
